The
Route 20 Association:
Somewhat like the original Cherry Valley Turnpike Association which
was organized in the 1920s to preserve the rural landscape and its
incredible scenic qualities of the Route 20 corridor, the present
day Route 20 Association began as an outgrowth of a series of community
meetings held in the early part of 1999. It was at that time a new
push was being felt in New York State to promote tourism as a means
of economic development. Route 20 in the area of our interest for
the most part tends to run along the boundaries of several of different
counties. Therefore many of those communities tend to be forgotten.
Many of us recognized that Route 20 has been and could be again a
destination itself as well as a primary thoroughfare to reach some
of central New York's most treasured and popular destinations.
The Route 20 Association has promoted several events including
old car and motorcycle rallies, helped tie together several footraces
and walks into an annual series, the Route 20 Road Challenge, and
supported a number of other events designed to bring tourists and
adventure-seekers into our area.
The Route 20 Association members come not only from within the
boundaries of the corridor, but all over the country. It seems almost
everyone who has traveled the route of the old Cherry Valley and
Great Western Turnpikes has developed a special place in their wanderlust
hearts for its scenic vistas, historic importance, and unique flavors
offered by a diversity of communities with a common tie.
